At Southlands High school, we are dedicated to fostering a deep love for English and a profound appreciation for the power of language. Our English curriculum is designed to inspire students from Key Stage 3 through Key Stage 4, equipping them with the fundamental skills to excel in both their academic and personal lives. We start by building on the foundational knowledge gained in Key Stage 2 and guide students through a structured progression that enhances their understanding and application of language and literature.

In Key Stage 3, our curriculum focuses on developing core skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We introduce students to a variety of literary genres and encourage them to explore themes, characters, and settings. Through engaging with diverse texts, students learn to analyse and interpret literature while improving their vocabulary and comprehension. Writing tasks are designed to cultivate creativity and clarity, from crafting imaginative stories to producing persuasive essays. Speaking and listening activities further support students in articulating their ideas and participating in discussions, laying the groundwork for effective communication.

As students transition into Key Stage 4, the curriculum develops further with a focus on preparing for GCSE examinations. In Year 10, students delve into the GCSE syllabus, studying key texts in depth and honing their analytical writing skills. At this stage, English is separated in to the two disciplines; English Language and Literature, providing a more specialized approach. This tailored instruction ensures students develop a nuanced understanding of both literary and linguistic elements. Year 11 emphasizes revision and exam preparation, with opportunities for mock exams and targeted feedback to refine their skills.

Beyond the classroom, we enrich students’ learning experiences with extracurricular activities and trips that broaden their horizons and deepen their engagement with English. By the end of their journey with us, students are not only prepared for their exams but are also passionate and proficient communicators, ready to embark on further studies or careers in various fields.
