Mathematics

The mathematics team at Southlands consists of 8 specialist teachers of Mathematics.  Each member of the team has their own classroom, equipped with Smart boards which enables them to develop strong routines and to promote learning within the mathematics department.

At KS3, we believe in a strong, ambitious mathematics curriculum, that sparks interest, enthusiasm and curiosity in our students; a curriculum that provides students with the problem-solving skills they need for life, and for future career pathways.

Our students will;

  • Develop conceptual understanding using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations.
  • Develop fluency, and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately.
  • An ability to link different aspects of mathematics to other topic areas, and across the wider curriculum.
  • An opportunity to reason mathematically, developing justifications and proof, and making generalisations.
  • The ability to communicate their ideas effectively using appropriate vocabulary and mathematical symbols
  • Develop the confidence to apply knowledge, skills and reasoning to standard and non-standard problems.

Mathematics is a creative and interconnected discipline. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.  GCSE Mathematics builds on the KS3 curriculum furthering students’ ability to;

  • Develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
  • Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
  • Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions
  • Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

The mathematics Department is led by the Director of Mathematics (Assistant Headteacher) who are supported by a Key Stage 4 Leader and a Key Stage 3 Leader. The Lead Practitioner will enhance this team by leading on the teaching pedagogy of the subject and will work with the department to develop best practice in the classroom.

Utilising the leadership skills within the team, we want to develop a love of mathematics in KS3 that provides a firm foundation for success at examination level at the end of KS4.
