At Southlands we understand that making the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 can be daunting for some young people. Our Transition Programme has been developed to ensure all pupils get to know the school and the key staff members they will be working with as Year 7 students.
Our Programme runs from March of the pupils’ Year 6 to October in their Year 7.
All pupils who are named on our new intake list receive an invitation to attend our Saturday Schools. These take place each month from March to June.
During the morning session pupils attend taster lessons with Southlands’ teachers. Over the course of the mornings the pupils visit all curriculum areas. They also meet the members of the Learner Experience Team and School Leadership Team who will support them when they are in Year 7.
In July all Year 6 pupils spend one day in their secondary school. The date for this is co-ordinated across all Lancashire schools.
On this day pupils arrive at school and take part in a Morning Meeting. They then attend lessons as if they were in Year 7.
The aim of the day is to enable the year 6 pupils to experience the routines of the school.
Prior to Transition Day, Parents / Carers are invited into school to hear from Senior Staff about Year 7. During this meeting the Transition work is given to Parents / Carers. These activities are designed to be completed over the summer break and prepare the pupils for the start of the new term.
We ask the primary schools to identify any pupils they feel may need extra support in making the transition to secondary school.
These may be pupils who are anxious or have additional needs. The pupils are invited into Southlands for a number of afternoon sessions where they get to know the layout of the building, meet students and work with the adults who will be there to support them.
To mark the end of their transition into Southlands, Year 7 students have a Recognition Evening. This celebrates the start they have made to their new school.
