Design Technology, including Food Technology

When we think about our average morning and the products we use, from the bed we wake up in, the cup that contains our first drink of the day, to the vehicle that transports us to school. Someone has designed and manufactured these products to solve a design problem and hopefully make our lives better.

This is what Design and Technology is all about and it gives young people the knowledge, skills and abilities to engage positively with the designed world and to harness the benefits of technology. Design and Technology also includes Cooking and Nutrition, which teaches students about the benefits of a healthy diet and gives them the skills to be able to cook tasty, nutritious dishes from scratch, which is one of the most important skills for a healthy life.

Design and Technology is an extensive subject and during Years 7,8 and 9 students will learn how products and systems are designed and manufactured, how to be innovative with ingredients and how to make creative use of a variety of resources including digital technologies, to improve the world around them.

In Years 10 and 11 students can choose to study either Edexcel Product Design or WJEC Hospitality and Catering. These two courses are a stepping stone for a varied range of careers within Engineering, Graphic illustration, Nutrition or more vocational apprenticeships.

Outside of the classroom, our students will be given the opportunity to enrich their knowledge and passion for the subject through some of our afterschool enrichment clubs we offer.

Design and Technology is taught by specialist staff on a two week timetable all year. Students are provided with the materials to ensure a levelling up for all students.
