Here at Southlands High School, we promote a healthy and active lifestyle for all students. Our aim is to provide pupils with the skills, knowledge and experiences needed to be physically literate, develop their character and know how to keep physically and mentally healthy. High quality teaching and learning at our school creates a safe environment which allows our pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. This is delivered through a range of experiences, provided by a broad and balanced curriculum and delivered by passionate teachers.
Our dynamic PE curriculum is designed to encourage physical fitness, teamwork and personal growth. Students will engage in a variety of sports, fitness activities, and wellness education that not only improves physical health, but also fosters leadership and collaboration skills. Our PE curriculum extends beyond the academic by providing a broad range of learning opportunities. Therefore, we seek to develop character traits such as resilience, confidence and independence whilst developing and discovering pupils’ interests and talent.
From the start of KS3 our intention is that our students will grow and develop using transferrable skills such as communication, empathy, motivation and most importantly self-belief. This is continued through KS4, as well as challenging our students to become leaders and coaches, preparing them for later life. We aim to make their Physical Education experience a pathway into a whole range of careers linked to sport, health and physical activity.
Overall, the PE curriculum provides knowledge through clear teacher modelling and instruction, as well as practice and feedback allowing all students to flourish within their learning experience.
Extra-Curricular clubs after school encourage all pupils to be physically active. Therefore, we provide our students with opportunities to enter competitions against local schools. Links to local sports clubs and facilities enables a smooth transition for pupils to further pursue healthy and active lifestyles.
