Modern Foreign Languages

As a team of four dedicated and passionate language teachers we truly live and breathe the work we do to provide a rich and diverse learning experience for all students. As a department we are strongly committed to making the study of a modern foreign language a rewarding experience for the entire ability range, so that each student will be able to achieve their potential. We want our pupils to be able to speak, listen, read and write in another language so that they can communicate with others and express their ideas and thoughts. We pride ourselves on fostering pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world and be fascinated by the culture of the wonderful Francophonie and Hispanic worlds.

Our carefully planned and sequenced KS3 and KS4 curriculum is built around the three pillars of phonics, grammar and vocabulary. Our schemes of learning are regularly reflected upon to ensure we offer pupils opportunities to be successful whilst enjoying a variety of tasks which may differ from the usual classroom experience, which engage, provide challenge and meet the needs of each individual student. We encourage everyone to “speak like a linguist” and use key acronyms to ensure that students are reflective learners and are confident in using a range of vocabulary and structures in the Target Language. Throughout their learning journey pupils are assessed across the four strands of language learning – listening, reading, speaking and writing, and are given feedback on how to further develop these following key tasks and assessments.

Success in these skills can provide a platform for further study – in an increasingly competitive and challenging global marketplace the ability to speak a modern foreign language is not only desirable, but it can also pave the way to career enhancement. By doing all of this, we aim prepare our MFL students to be responsible global citizens of the future who can communicate in another language and reap the rewards this unique skill brings to them. This is a responsibility we feel extremely privileged to have.
